International Cooperation

On April 15 the Italian Embassy in Latvia celebrated Italian Research Day 2019 with Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and in collaboration with Vita-Salute San Raffeale University (UniSR) in Milan. This annual event recognises Italy’s achievements in science and technology, and is aimed at strengthening the cooperation between Italian researchers and their counterparts in other countries. The Italian Research Day is an initiative supported by the Italian government.

The focus of this year's Italian Research Day in Latvia was on the field of medicine. During this event researchers from UniSR shared their research findings with the Latvian scientific community. Prof. Stefano Frara presented his research team’s studies on the role of hormones on skeletal health, whereas Prof. Federica Agosta discussed her and her colleagues’ research on the imaging of neuro-degenerative conditions by the application of MRI.

As  H.E. Mr. Sebastiano Fulci, the Italian Ambassador to Latvia, acknowledged the closest collaborations between countries develop through ties in education, research and culture. In his speech, he recognised RSU’s partnership with UniSR, which is one of Italy’s leading academic institutions.

'We are very pleased with our successful collaboration with UniSR within the Erasmus+ programme. This collaboration has provided exceptional opportunities for our medical residents to undergo training at one of Italy’s leading university hospitals and research centres. When our medical residents return from San Raffaele, they value the knowledge and skills that they have acquired during their traineeships very highly, especially the opportunity to learn about the use of artificial intelligence in surgery,' said Baiba Pētersone, Director of the RSU International Department.

The RSU International Department expresses its gratitude to the Italian Embassy in Rīga, in particular Ambassador Fulci, and colleagues at UniSR for their significant support to this event.
