About Study Course
Objective
Raise awareness among students about the role of the family in society and protection of the best interests of the child as the most vulnerable part of society. Raise awareness among students about the content of the children's rights, highlight key principles for protecting children's rights, and enhance understanding of the competence of the protection systems and institutions in the field of protection of children’s rights. Develop the students’ ability to identify, analyse and address problems related to the family law and children's rights. During the study course, students must familiarise themselves with the regulatory enactments of the Republic of Latvia regulating the family and children’s rights, as well as learn to apply them when providing assistance to families and children in crisis.
Prerequisites
Introduction to civil law, national and legal basis. Applying law.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the study course, students will have gained an understanding of the regulation of family and children’s rights and social guarantees for the range of people studied during the course. Students will have acquired general knowledge of the mechanism of responsibility for violations of children’s rights.
Upon completion of the study course, students will be able to assess and find solutions to general family law issues and specific issues of children's rights within the scope of social work competence; and students will have the skills to distinguish between social guarantees and rights applicable to a particular range of individuals. Students will have acquired skills in finding and applying regulatory enactments and the competence of the institutions regarding liability for violations of the rights of children.
Students will have learned how to deal with specific situations in family law issues, specific situations in children's rights issues, and social guarantees for families and children.
