Psychiatric residents of the Young Psychiatrists Section of the Latvian Psychiatric Association are organising Mental Health Day in collaboration with RSU and the RSU Department of Psychiatry and Narcology. During this day there will be a series of seminars about mental health aimed at medical students. The intention behind this initiative is to distribute knowledge, increase insight into mental health, learn techniques to relieve stress, and to help students endure long exposure to high intensity stress, as unhealthy stress can lead to impaired mental and physical health.
Medical studies are interesting and exciting, but we are all familiar with that feeling when the rose tinted glasses come off and the studies get more complicated. There is increasingly more material to learn, more scientific activities to participate in, and you also can’t forget about your private and social life! This leads to increased psycho-emotional pressure. Medical professionals in particular are prone to depression, burnout and anxiety. Without the appropriate social support studying medicine can lead to problems with sleep patterns, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, increased use of recreational drugs and alcohol, and even suicidal thoughts.
We all want to be become good doctors. It is therefore important to care for one’s physical and mental health every day. Support and encouragement from competent peers is crucial.
We are open, knowledgeable and active trainees in psychiatry, you are a medical student. Together we have a shared experience and feelings about what it is like to study medicine. During the seminar we will offer to evaluate your psycho-emotional state, help you understand your emotions and feelings, and increase your knowledge about how to improve your psychological well-being, how to overcome stress and learn more effectively.
