The European Olympiad of Experimental Science (EOES) is a multidisciplinary, integrated, team-based science olympiad for 15–17-year-olds.

The tasks set in the olympiad are complex, problem-oriented, and based mainly on experimental and practical work in biology, chemistry, and physics, but also indirectly in mathematics, information technology, environmental sciences, and more. Each team is composed of three members who work together to solve practical and theoretical tasks in order to reach a common solution. Latvia has participated in EOES for more than 15 years and had good results.

  • On 10 December 2022, the first of the EOES took place online on the e-studies platform estudijas.rsu.lv. The olympiad is open to pupils in grades 8-11 from Latvian schools who were under the age of 17 by 31 December 2022.
  • The first qualifying round included both open and multiple-choice questions on biology, chemistry, and physics, which tested students' ability to navigate previously unfamiliar topics, analyse various situations, perform calculations, and reason logically.
  • After the first round, the students who scored the highest were invited to a second round. This took place in person on 4 February 2023 at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). In the second round, participants carried out practical work individually in each natural science discipline (chemistry, biology, and physics) and demonstrated their skills in carrying out practical experiments and their ability to obtain, process, and interpret results. 12 pupils were selected for participation in the international olympiad.
  • EOES 2023 will take place in Latvia from 29 April to 6 May.

The olympiad in Latvia is organised in cooperation with the National Centre for Education.
