Objective

To acquaint students with the possibilities of technologies that can be used in solving and preventing crime in the Republic of Latvia and abroad. To strengthen students’ theoretical knowledge in the use of the latest technologies in inspecting and recording the scene; finding, visualizing, recording and collecting objects and traces of various types; determining forensic examinations; as well as in the investigation of certain types of crime.

Criminalistics, Criminal Process. General Part, Criminal Process. Special Part.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the study course, students are able to:
1. Demonstrate in-depth or advanced knowledge and understanding of the opportunities and conditions for using technology to solve and prevent crime.
2. Demonstrate in-depth or advanced knowledge and understanding of the role of examination in solving and preventing crime, the variety of methods used in examinations, as well as demonstrate knowledge on the range of issues to be addressed in the examination according to the specific situation.
3. Demonstrate knowledge on the use of various types of technology when locating and collecting material evidence at the scene.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the latest technical developments in solving and preventing crime.

Skills

As a result of completing the study course, students are able to:
1. Model and analyse the course of events by applying the latest technologies in recording the scene inspection; determine the necessary technical means and methods for finding, recording and collecting various types of objects and traces; evaluate material evidence and determine forensic examination; determine the application of the necessary technologies in solving and preventing certain crimes.
2. Critically evaluate the situation, make appropriate decisions, and analyse the results.
3. Debate and justify one’s opinion on the decision made from different perspectives and from the point of view of scientific achievements.

Competence

As a result of completing the study course, students:
1. Are able to decide independently on the application of appropriate technical means and methods for recording the scene inspection; are able to decide independently on the possible examinations of different types of objects and traces using appropriate technical equipment; are able to decide independently on the inspection of different types of objects and traces at a forensic institution, determining the necessary examination and asking the expert questions of interest according to the possibilities of the latest technology; are able to decide independently on the necessary application of the latest technology in solving and preventing of certain crimes.
2. Are able to find independently the necessary information, analyse it, and make the appropriate decision for completing the given task.
3. Are able to find up-to-date information on technologies used in solving and preventing crime; are able to analyse the effectiveness of the application thereof independently, pointing out possible shortcomings as well as possible issues, and give their opinion, substantiate it and participate in discussion on the latest scientific achievements.
