About Study Course
Objective
The aim of the course is to raise awareness and promote a basic knowledge about what Human Rights norms and principles work in Latvia and what Human Rights protection instruments are available to Latvian residents. In the course of learning of the subject, students will be presented with a range of various topics to be studied; basic Human Rights concepts will be analysed; their substance and content identified. Students will gain an understanding of the Human Rights regulatory framework – rights and other types of social norms, acquire knowledge of the sources of laws, application of legal norms in practice and forms of legal action. The course will cover Human Rights development prospects in the European legal environment and in the world.
The objectives of the course are to develop skills to identify and address fundamental Human Rights problems, to be able to analyse and apply the knowledge acquired in the study process to the compliance of national law with international human rights standards, to prepare students for further legal studies. During the course, particular attention will be paid to the role of the Council of Europe and the European Union in respect for Human Rights, protection and promotion, as well as various issues of globalisation processes.

Learning outcomes
Students will be able: to name and identify the most important Human Rights aspects as a result of the acquisition of the study course; to describe and analyse the main fundamental principles of these rights in the world and in Latvia; they will be prepared to work independently and apply Human Rights instruments, as well as the ability to defend and promote compliance with these Human Rights standards in Latvia and in the world as well.
As a result of the studies, students will be able to see and analyse potential Human Rights problems, their causes and prevention solutions; they will be prepared to take the necessary steps and action in cases of potential Human Rights violations, with the effective application of the relevant international and national rules.
The acquired knowledge will allow students to participate in the work of law enforcement and assistance institutions, will promote the competence of these institutions directly in the fields of protection, strengthening, development and promotion of Human Rights; the acquired knowledge will also allow students to participate in international competitions for job offers outside Latvia's borders.
