About Study Course
Objective
To improve communication skills in English for academic and professional purposes and to promote the acquisition and professional use of medical terminology.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of English at the level of secondary school programme.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course the students will be able to
• recognise and explain in English or translate into Latvian medical terminology connected with the maternal and new-born health and prenatal and postnatal care;
• recognise different forms used to express present, past or future activities;
• recognise the correct word order in statements and questions;
• list the common telephone phrases for starting, maintaining and finishing the conversation; for giving and taking telephone messages.
On successful completion of the course the students will be able to:
• use the relevant medical terminology when speaking to patients / clients and colleagues;
• explain different medical procedures (taking blood pressure, taking the patient's temperature, taking blood samples, making injections, etc.);
• advise women on healthy lifestyle;
• use relevant telephone phrases when speaking to patients / clients;
• ask different types of questions to patients;
• give information about the patient both in spoken and written language.
On completion of the course the students will be able to use spoken and written English efficiently within their professional field.
