Aim

The main objective of the BBCE project is to establish a joint Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence for advanced biomaterials development based on the long-term strategic cooperation between AO Research Institute Davos (Switzerland) and Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany) on the one hand and Riga Technical University (RTU), Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS) on the other hand
Total project funding: 397'623.75 EUR

Description

Project partners

  • The leading partner is Riga Technical University (RTU, Latvia) – RTU Rudolfs Cimdins Riga Biomaterials Innovation and Development Centre
  • Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU, Latvia) – Institute of Stomatology and Laboratory of Finished Dosage Forms
  • Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (LIOS, Latvia) - Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Pharmacology
  • AO Research Institute Davos (AO Research Institute Davos – ARI, Switzerland)
  • Friedrich Alexander University of Elrangen-Nuremberg (FAU, Germany) – Institute of Biomaterials

Project activities

  • Evaluation of RTU, RSU and LIOS research capacity. Current research excellence, capacity, infrastructure and human resources of BBCE core institutions in Latvia will be evaluated. Short term leading staff collaborative visits will be held in Latvia, Switzerland and Germany. In addition, market research will be conducted
  • Development of BBCE roadmap. A strategy for sustainable growth of BBCE and research excellence achievement will be created, ensuring a full cycle of a biomaterials pathway from laboratory to clinics. Each of the core BBCE institutions in Latvia will develop a roadmap of their respective biomaterial research field: RTU – biomaterial development, synthesis and material characterisation; LIOS – biomaterial analysis in vitro and in vivo; RSU – transfer of biomaterials to patients, implementation in clinics and evaluation of biomaterials as drug delivery systems
  • Business plan development. The business plan will be focused on the setting-up of the BBCE and will include a detailed analysis of partners involved, a work plan, a feasibility study of planned infrastructural investments in line with the long term strategic vision
  • Dissemination and outreach. Awareness of BBCE among the academic community, state institutions, society and industry on EU level will be ensured
