Student Research and Innovation Grants
The aim of the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Student Research and Innovation Grants is to support and motivate RSU students to carry out research or innovation projects
How to apply
Applications for the grants are open two times per academic year (once per semester) for as long as financial resources are available.
Only full- and part-time RSU students in bachelor's and master’s study programmes, or those in residency may apply. Undergraduate and graduate students can apply in teams of 2-5. Medical residents can apply individually, or in teams of up to 5 people. To apply, teams need to have independently recruited at least one mentor who is an expert in the field. Prior to submitting an application, a team has to confer with, and agree upon all documentation with their mentor.
Applying for a grant
- Complete a project application form,
- fill out a project budget estimate,
- submit an authorisation by the Research Ethics Committee or department (if the study in question calls for such an authorisation).

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the project, the logical structure, the deployment capacity, project quality and sustainability, and the budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the amount of a single grant?
The amount of the grant is up to 4,000 euros. The minimum amount is 1,000 euros.
- Can I receive a grant if I am a medical resident or a master’s student?
To apply for a grant, undergraduate and master’s students have to form a team with 2-5 members.
Medical residents have to form teams of at least 1, but not more than 5 members. Teams can also be mixed.
- Can I receive a grant if I am a doctoral student?
Teams composed of students or PhD students from other universities are not eligible to apply. Students can involve PhD students as mentors.
- What ideas can I apply for the grant with?
The grant is open to research or innovation projects that require additional funding for implementation or quality enhancement. Students with ideas related to dental research are particularly encouraged to apply in the spring semester 2024.
- What are the criteria in evaluating applications?
The Grant Committee will evaluate the substantiation of the project, its implementation capacity, quality and sustainability as well as the budget.
The team can score additional points if team members are medical residents and the project is implemented via one of the following platforms:
- vertically integrated projects,
- RSU Business Incubator,
- student interest groups,
- Researchers' Academy.
Teams can be made up of different platforms!
- What conditions need to be adhered to after having received the grant?
While the project is being implemented interim reports must be submitted every six months detailing what tasks have been performed and are being planned. The interim report must be signed and commented by the team's mentor.
At the end of the project, an oral report must be given to the Grant Committee. The team mentor has to be present.
During the project implementation period, or at the latest within two years from the start of the Grant, the team must plan to present their results of the research (indicating RSU as the institutional affiliation) at an international conference.
The Committee is entitled to suspend or terminate financing of a project for a period of time if one of the facts referred to in Paragraph 8.5 of the Regulations is found.
- What happens if one of the team members decides to leave the team?
Not later than two weeks after the fact has been established, the Commitee has to be notified in writing regarding the change of composition of the team.
All situations requiring a written application to be submitted to the Committee, have been described in Paragraph 8.6 of the Regulations.
- What actions should be taken if the project is not implemented after having received the grant?
In any situation when the team feels that they are not able to fulfil the obligations of the project or the rules set out in the Regulations, and the situation can no longer be handled with the help of their mentor, the team has to address the Committee in writing.
All situations requiring a written application to be submitted to the Committee are described in Paragraph 8.6 of the Regulations.
- How do the grants differ from the RSU SU Funding to support science?
The student research and innovation grants provide funding for the purchase of materials or reagents as well as for representation expenses, including business trips which are intended for the presentation of the idea of the grant, presentation at a scientific conference or for publishing the findings of the study. It is possible to receive a grant in the amount of 1,000 - 4,000 euros.
The RSU SU Funding to support science, on the other hand, provides support only for the presentation of the findings of the study (up to 300 euros) and associated participation fees, travel and accommodation expenses or publishing in an international citation scientific journals (up to 600 euros). Also, support is provided to attending events related to professional competence (up to 300 euros).
