About Study Course
Objective
The purpose of the study course is to provide students of the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) with theoretical knowledge on latest developments in the field and to develop practical skills in selecting, analysing and evaluating information sources and the information obtained from them. To improve understanding of critical thinking, and to form scientifically justified decisions when using it. To develop skills in creation of overviews of scientific literature.
Prerequisites
Successful mastering of the study course and use of obtained knowledge, skills and competencies requires knowledge in study courses of Nursing Studies: Evidence-based care and professional activity of nurses, Introduction to library use, Medical terminology in a foreign language, Clinical care, Public health, General psychology and understanding of the scientific papers created in the study process.
Learning outcomes
After completing the study course, the student will be able:
• To name and describe the significance of evidence-based practice in the work of nurses and in the process of caring for patients.
• To describe the research problem, its topicality.
• To identify and define the problem and to show critical thinking skills relevant for searching for a solution.
• To name information search resources and to recognise solutions relevant for the clinical situation.
• To be familiar with sources of information.
• To think in generalisations and creatively.
After completing the study course, the student will learn how:
• To integrate research results in nursing practices.
• To use evidence-based professional information.
• To evaluate latest evidence-based research and to integrate it in care work in accordance with the clinical situation.
• To follow the development of latest medical technology and scientific achievements.
• To integrate innovation in nursing practices.
• To evaluate the importance of critical thinking in patient care.
• To identify and define the problem.
• To study the situation, to summarise information and to evaluate data.
• To propose, analyse and evaluate alternative solutions, to make conclusions and to make decisions.
• To assume liability for the decisions made and actions.
• To identify the most important matters and main reasons in complex situations.
• To evaluate own professional improvement, to evaluate its impact on practice.
• To search for and process information.
• To convincingly formulate and make oral and written arguments in accordance with the context.
• To use good design principles when creating presentations and preparing reports.
After completing the study course, the student will be independently able:
