Objective

The objective of the study course is to learn the practical basics of environmental health, the methods usable during the placement on the importance of different components of the environment (air, water, soil), pollution, adverse and harmful factors, the impact on health, identification, assessment, control, prevention or reduction thereof.

Prerequisites

Prior knowledge in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, microbiology, physiology is required.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

During the course, the student gains knowledge of the following:
• the meaning, principles, directions, objectives and practical applications of environmental health;
• air, water, soil as ecological components of the environment, their pollution and preventive measures to reduce pollution;
• requirements for the planning and landscaping of populated areas, as well as planning, landscaping and operation of housing, public buildings, medical care establishments;
• waste management.

Skills

During the course, the student acquires the following skills:
• to independently, critically analyse, apply ecological reasoning to support their views and evaluate environmental health as a preventive branch of environmental science and medicine in the preservation and enhancement of human health;
• to determine and assess microclimate, lighting, air, water and soil pollution;
• to carry out sanitary and hygienic inspections of various facilities (drinking water sources, treatment and disinfection complexes, waste disposal and utilisation sites, apartments, medical care establishments, swimming pools) to identify risk factors harmful to health.

Competence

The acquired competence allows to:
• see the connection between the state of human health and the conditions of the surrounding environment;
• apply knowledge of the basics of argumentation, logic and rhetoric to analyse practical situations;
• develop recommendations, measures to prevent or reduce harmful environmental risk factors, ensuring optimal interaction between the human body and the environment;
• take responsibility and demonstrate leadership skills in cases where the interests of environmental safety, individuals or the society as a whole require it.
