Objective

The course will provide a comprehensive overview of the role and functioning of a health information system, and demonstrate the possibilities of health information systems to enable the generation, storage, analysis and dissemination of information in a timely and secure manner to ensure the functioning of the health ecosystem.
The course will cover the key concepts of the development and implementation of information systems. methodologies, activities and approaches to be applied in the development and implementation of modern health information systems. The course will focus on the growing role of information technology in the healthcare ecosystem, demonstrating different types of health information systems.

No specific prior knowledge is required for the course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the study course, the students will be able to:
• Understand the basic theories and principles of health information management;
• Describe the role of health information systems in the healthcare system;
• Describe the role of health information management in quality assurance, performance improvement, resource planning and management and risk management in healthcare systems;
• Understand the challenges in planning and implementing the information infrastructure;
• Understand different types of information systems used in the healthcare sector;
• Understand how health records are collected, stored, accessed, shared, maintained and secured in health information systems.

Skills

The students will learn how to:
• Explain how health information systems are organised and managed;
• Choose and apply strategies for improving the quality and outcomes of health care using health information systems;
• Apply health information management techniques to specific healthcare situations and problems;
• Apply electronic health records, data tools and reports in decision making;
• Plan health informatics solutions to improve clinical and health care goals.

Competence

Students will be able to:
• Recognise the selection and organization of data in terms of supporting decisions made at different levels of the healthcare sector;
• Recognise the role of information systems in the different dimensions of management in health care institution;
• Link different health system challenges to health informatics.
