Objective

Ensure that students can acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and competence in the field of Civil Law. Acquire basic knowledge of civil rights as a branch of law, develop awareness of the basic concepts of Civil Law; introduce students to the sources of Civil Law, the most important legislation in the field of civil law; develop an understanding of the application and interpretation of legal regulations in civil law; deepen understanding of the subjects and objects of civil law, types of transactions and representation.

Prerequisites

Legal Theory; History of Latvian Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On completion of the study course students are capable of demonstrating basic and specialised knowledge and critical understanding of this knowledge of the system of civil rights and their place in the whole legal system, sources, objects, subjects and representation of civil law. Are able to develop the understanding of the concepts and legal relationships that are essential to civil law.

Skills

Upon completion of the course students are able to:
• Demonstrate a scientific approach to solving problems.
• Outline their learning independently.
• Take decisions and find creative solutions in changing or uncertain circumstances.
• Take responsibility and initiative by doing the work individually, on a team or by managing other people's work.
• Direct further learning and professional development of their and their subordinates.
• Identify the objects and subjects of civil law, are knowledgeable about the sources of civil law, in interpretation of the statement of will, in identification of the participants of the deal, in recognition of the subject and type of the deal and in the constructions of the components of the deal.

Competence

Upon completion of the course students are able to:
• Assess the environmental and societal impacts of their professional activities.
• Show their understanding of professional ethics.
• Independently obtain, select and analyse information and use it, apply the acquired knowledge and skills in professional activities; apply systematically and rationally legal methods, taking responsibility of the decisions and actions, raising the professional qualification independently and on regular basis; analyse legal information and topical issues; make proposals for improvement of the legal framework in the field of the civil law.
• Draw up a civil deal, interpret civil deals, are knowledgeable about the principles of civil law, understand the nature and elements of a legally concluded deal.
