Aim

The study “Willingness to defend the country in the Baltic states: implications for national security and NATO’s collective defence” is being implemented as a part of the project “Re-enforcing the societal resilience of the Alliance: the case of the Baltic states” that is co-financed by NATO.

Description

Societal resilience is a fundamental part of any state’s defence and national security system. If citizens are not willing to defend their own country, it makes the task more difficult for state authorities. Vulnerabilities like these are sought out and used by other states.

The study that is co-financed by NATO approaches this issue by reviewing the theoretical assumptions on citizens’ willingness to defend their own country, the role of societal resilience in NATO policy, as well as the Baltic situation looking back as well as to the future. The study also puts forward recommendations for the Baltic states and for NATO.

The study will be published as an e-book at the end of 2021.

The study at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) is conducted by Māris Andžāns, Mārtiņš Vargulis and Aleksandra Palkova in cooperation with researchers from Vilnius University, the International Centre for Defence and Security in Tallinn, as well as the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
