Dr. Sarai B. Aharoni from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel will be giving a guest lecture at RSU on “Breaking Paradigms: Studying Local Women’s Peace Movements and Security Initiatives in Israel”. The lecture will take place in the Hippocrates Auditorium at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) on 15 October at 13:00.
Abstract
This presentation will address methodological concerns relating to the study of women’s local engagement with international peace and security norms. Through a comparison of two particular modes of activism that developed in Israel: anti-militarist resistance and gender mainstreaming strategies, I offer a feminist reading of the concept of localisation. Localisation occurs when local actors translate and adapt norms originally formulated in a universal language by the international community to express local values, interests, and political identities. The presentation will follow the process of partial implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in Israel and the variation of local interpretations. I argue that these variations are strategic choices made by various actors which reveal the differences in the way women's groups understand feminist dilemmas concerning gender equality and armed-conflict in Israel.
