We welcome you to participate in the conference celebrating a hundred years of academic dental education in Latvia!

After the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed on 18 November 1918, medical professionals raised the important question regarding dental education in Latvia. In 1919, the Latvian Dental Association reviewed and assessed the development of dentistry and decided that the two-and-a-half-year Russian education model no longer met the requirements and standards of an academic education. On 12 May 1919, the Council of Universities adopted a five-year academic dental curriculum. The new educational programme was developed by Kārlis Barons who in 1921 became the Head of the Dental Faculty. First 18 students began their studies that same year.

Since then, dental education in Latvia has constantly experienced development and changes. Celebrating a century of academic dental education in Latvia, the presentations at the conference will describe education in various historical periods and today.

Nowadays higher education in Latvia has successfully joined European Higher Education Area and dentists are educated in accordance with the EU guidelines and professional directives. Since Latvia regained its independence in 1991, close cooperation with other universities both in Europe and elsewhere in the world is very important to the educational process. Representatives from universities in Estonia and Lithuania have been invited to describe dental education in their countries, while professor Stefan Ruhl from the University at Buffalo has been invited to describe dental education in the USA.

Further evolution and development of the education of oral health care specialists might be expected in the near future. It is determined by the tasks set by the World Health Organization (WHO) – dental health personnel must be a part of the primary health service and work side by side with other health workers to prevent and treat oral disease in the same way as disease in other parts of the body. The president of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Professor Pål Barkvoll of the University of Oslo, has been invited to speak about perspectives on the future of oral health professional’s education in Europe.

We welcome you to participate in the conference, where the focus will be on international cooperation, a look back at history, an overview of today's achievements and future challenges for health care professionals in Latvia and for humanity in general.

Prof. Stefan Ruhl

stefan_ruhl.png

My laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms of initial bacterial attachment to teeth, tissue, or biomaterial surfaces in the mouth. We try to unravel the molecular mechanisms of how glycoproteins in saliva or on host cells are recognized by glycan-binding microbial adhesins. It is our long-term goal to better understand the modulating role of saliva in supporting colonization of the human oral cavity by a benign commensal microbiota, and in host defense against pathogenic microorganisms. More recently, our research involves the investigation of evolutionary mechanisms that have shaped host-microbial interactions in the human mouth.
