Preliminary Knowledge: | Basic knowledge of biology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, clinical disciplines, pharmacology, psychology, internal medicine and surgery, and patient care. | ||||||||
Objective: | To provide knowledge about the types of pain, mechanisms of pain development, treatment and care options. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | The student independently studies the methodological materials and literature offered in the study programme, and makes a summary of the acquired information. The student takes part in discussions on specific clinical cases, analysis of therapy, prevention and care. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | In order to successfully master the study course and prepare for the end-of-course examination of the study course, the student performs the following activities – compulsory completion of assigned tasks. Marked with i/ni (completed or not completed). 1. Participation in practical classes. For each missed class, prepare a written presentation or, if possible, participate in another group’s class on the topic of the missed class 2. Solution and analysis of care in several clinical cases in practical sessions (i/ni). The final grade for the course consists of: 50% - a written examination in the form of a multiple-choice test with 40 theoretical questions; and 50% - attendance of practical classes and completed tasks. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Upon completion of the study course, the student will be able to: • understand and describe the main mechanisms of pain development; • understand the main types and causes of pain and their biological and biopsychosocial significance; • evaluate the complaints of pain patients, their role and impact in the clinical practice. | ||||||||
Skills: | Upon completion of the study course, the student will be able to: • examine and evaluate symptoms of pain patients and their needs at different stages of care; • identify the main types of pain and their causes in various clinical situations; • choose the most appropriate form of therapeutic care of the pain patient; • explain the causes and treatment of pain to patients, their relatives and care providers; • provide psycho-emotional support to patients and their relatives and educate them. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Upon completion of the study course, students will be able to: • participate in planning of patient care at different stages of the disease; • prescribe relevant therapy to an individual patient on the basis of a biopsychosocial approach in cooperation with other medical professionals; • estimate the short-term and long-term effects of pain therapy and solve prognostic tasks; • implement health promotion measures, prevention and early detection of problems. | ||||||||
