Preliminary Knowledge:
Chemistry and biology at secondary school level.
Objective:
To gain the knowledge about the structural and functional features of the macromolecules found in the living organisms. To acquire the knowledge about the chemical reactions, interactions and main metabolic processes that occur within the human organism.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Independently study the latest scientific literature and integrate it into the studying process. Independent preparation of the homework specified in the class protocols before the relevant seminar. Independently prepare/fill in class protocols. To make a presentation at the end of the course. Using the sources available in the e-studies and the mandatory literature specified in the e-studies to independently prepare for colloquiums and the exam. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
• attendance of the practical classes; • colloquiums in written form - during the study course there are 2 colloquia; • final exam in written form. • The final grade of the study course "Medical Biochemistry" consists of the cumulative assessment of the colloquia (50%) and the exam (50%).

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:After the study course the student will be able to: • describe the function and structure of the main macromolecules found in the human organism; • describe the structure and function of proteins, including general knowledge about the mechanism of enzymes; • explain the enzymatic digestion processes in the human organism; • describe the main metabolic processes in the human organism; • describe and recognize the biochemical reactions of the main metabolic pathways.
Skills:After the study course the student will be able to use the acquired knowledge to: • describe and analyze the digestion process in the human organism; • analyze and evaluate the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins; • define the main metabolic processes and principles of bioenergetics, regulation; • describe the interconnections between different metabolic pathways.
Competencies:The students will gain the necessary knowledge to understand what is necessary for biochemical processes to be fully operational and they will be able to analyze and discuss about the impact of various factors on the biochemical processes of the human organism.
