| Objective: | Give an insight into historical genesis and development various regulations of public life, division of the society and legal status, branches of law, institutes and courts up to recent times; identify key facts in the history of law in Latvia and abroad, major rights monuments and sources; and understand the historical process of law development in Latvia and abroad. | ||||||||

| Unaided Work: | Writing of independent assignments according to the topics given during the classes and the requirements set: to write an essay (summary) (2 – 3 pages of plain text, 12-point size, 1.5 line spacing) on a specific field of public or private law in the territory of Latvia within the period from 10th century to 1918 or in the period 1918 – to today (for example, Marriage Law in the territory of Latvia from the 10th century to 1918” or “Criminal Law in the territory of Latvia from 1918 to today”), independent study of the historical literature indicated, preparation of the presentation on the selected topic, a test on the material covered during the course. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||

| Skills: | Ability to analyse, compare and work with different rights monuments, scientific and legal literature; ability to analyse various regularities of the development of a historical state, society and law; ability to perceive various problems and solutions thereof; understanding of the national legal system of Latvia as a part of the continental legal system; ability to find relationship between the past and the present. | ||||||||
