Preliminary Knowledge:
Biomedical aspects of human functioning; General psychology; Biology and genetics.
Objective:
To form an understanding of the history of the mental health care system in the world and in Latvia. To form an understanding of the Latvian mental health care system. To develop an understanding of the classification of mental disorders according to ICD-11. To form an understanding of the epidemiology, etiology and pathogenesis of mental disorders, their clinical manifestations and course, the basic principles of their treatment and rehabilitation. To develop an understanding of the possibilities of psychological help in cases of mental disorders. To develop an understanding of the ethical and legal principles to be followed in cases of mental disorders. To develop an understanding of care planning and the division of responsibilities between different professionals in cases of mental disorders. To acquire basic skills in working with clients with mental disorders - formation of a therapeutic alliance, assessment of the client's mental condition and its dynamics. To acquire basic skills for defining the client's social problems and creating opportunities to solve them.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Students independently acquire the theoretical part of practical work, using RSU e-study materials, information given in the lecture and recommended additional literature. During the lessons, the results of the independent work are checked and discussed in groups. Students assess the mental condition of the clinical cases examined during the practical work and develop a treatment plan, which is analyzed in groups.
Assessment Criteria:
The final mark is cumulative. Students independently acquire the theoretical part, using RSU e-study materials, information given in lectures and recommended additional literature. During the lessons, the results of the independent work are checked and discussed in groups. A written exam is scheduled at the end of the cycle. The course evaluation consists of 50% - exam mark and 50% - independent works.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Acquired knowledge on the prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and course of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders (according to ICD-11), mental health promotion, prevention of mental and behavioral disorders, and suicide.
Skills:Able to recognize and evaluate basic psychiatric symptoms; to differentiate the norm from the stress reaction in everyday situations and mental pathology, to assess the risk of self-injury; to empathically interview patients with mental disorders, to be aware of the importance of therapeutic relationships in psychiatry; to develop skills to cooperate with other members of the treatment team.
Competencies:Able to assess the patient's mental condition, justify the decision on the need for assistance to the patient. Able to create an understanding of the patient about mental illness and justify the need for help. Is able to cooperate with other persons involved in therapy. A creative, ethical approach to outpatient and clinic care.
