Preliminary Knowledge: | Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathophysiology. | ||||||||
Objective: | To provide students with training that allows them to acquire general surgical knowledge and skills on the following topics: asepsis and antiseptics, bleeding types, and methods of bleeding control, blood components, and replacement transfusion. Wound healing and wound management, basics of anesthesia, and intensive care in general surgery. Principles of treatment of surgical infection. Principles of treatment of the most common surgical diseases and trauma. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | On completion of the study course student acquires basic knowledge and understanding of patient treatment process in surgical department; of infection control requirements; asepsis/antiseptic agent and method application; bleedings and their control methods; available preparations for transfusion; wound healing and wound management; surgical infection causes; acute abdominal surgical diseases and most frequent surgical disease and injury management. | ||||||||
Skills: | Students will have acquired practical skills in wound dressing; surgical hand scrub and hand hygiene rules in surgical department and operating theatre dress policy. The students will be able to maintain asepsis and antisepsis; to apply temporary bleeding control methods; they will be able to determine the blood type and to manage transfusion request proceedings; to evaluate the patient’s condition and to provide/organise aid in trauma and acute situations. | ||||||||
Competencies: | The students will qualify for comprehensive participation in common basic surgical patient treatment processes observing requirements in surgical departments – blood transfusion, postoperative wound care and diagnostic options in usual surgical emergencies. | ||||||||
