Preliminary Knowledge: | Anatomy, biology, physics and physiology. | ||||||||
Objective: | To provide opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the anatomy of the eye, diseases of the anterior part of the eye, cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, eye injuries, paediatric ophthalmology and orbital diseases. To acquire skills of providing emergency medical care, visual acuity examination, diagnosing ophthalmological diseases, comprehending treatment and prevention principles. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Individual work with professional literature on ophthalmology and e-study materials. The students measure visual acuity independently and examine the eye with the slit-lamp. The students write an examination protocol. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | A test during each practical class, a test at the end of the course (assessment depending on the knowledge: pass / fail). The end-of-course examination: OSCE. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | On successful completion of the study course the students will have acquired in-depth knowledge and will be able to show eye anatomy on visual aids, to describe physiology of the eye, to explain the most frequent eye disease etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnostic and therapeutic principles and the prognosis. | ||||||||
Skills: | On successful course completion the students will be able to: • measure visual acuity; • examine the ocular fundus by ophthalmoscope; • handle acute situations in ophthalmology; • examine eye patients to assess the need and volume of ophthalmic assistance. | ||||||||
Competencies: | On completion of the course programme the student will be ready to work with ophthalmic patients in General Practitioner’s surgery and to continue their further studies. The student will be able to perform primary ophthalmic care in compliance with ethical and legal aspects, to evaluate the judgement of an ophthalmologist and to plan the examination and treatment of a patient; to interpret the results of ophthalmic examination, to relate these results to the specific clinical situation and to link them with the joint examination process. | ||||||||
