Preliminary Knowledge: | Medical genetics, human molecular biology, normal physiology, clinical pharmacology in dentistry, internal diseases with propedeutics, human anatomy, dental anatomy, embryology, histology, maxillofacial surgery, oral surgery, pathology, psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy, biostatistics, prosthodontics and clinic, dental and maxillofacial diagnostic radiology, prophylaxis in dentistry, endodontics: preclinical and clinical course, periodontology preclinical and clinical course, paediatric dentistry, restorative dentistry, cariology, biomaterials in dentistry, contact culture in dentistry, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, paediatric maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngology for a dentist, paediatrics, Orthodontics I course. | ||||||||
Objective: | The course aims to introduce the principles and methods of treating dental, maxillary, and mandibular growth anomalies. It develops the ability to differentiate between simple and complex treatment strategies and recognize when to refer patients to an orthodontist. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Individual work on preparation of presentations on periodical literature and clinical cases, acquisition of the seminar material. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | At the completion of the 9th semester, 5th study year, the first part of the cumulative examination of the state examination: presentation of periodical literature, will be organized. During session a written examination: multiple choice questions (20 questions) and one written question (an essay) on a particular topic will be applied. During the examination knowledge about diagnostic methods used in orthodontics, general orthodontic treatment principles and management of premature loss of tooth/teeth will be tested. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | • Will be necessary knowledge at the level of understanding about the principles of treatment of dental and jaw anomalies in children, adolescents and adults; • will have the necessary knowledge at the level of understanding about the general principles of orthodontic treatment planning; • general knowledge of mechanical and functional equipment used in orthodontics will be required; • will have the necessary knowledge to provide assistance in cases of dental injuries; • will have the necessary knowledge about bite deformations caused by prematurely lost teeth. | ||||||||
Skills: | Will be able to inform patients and their parents about orthodontic treatment principles; Ability to evaluate the strength of evidence of a scientific article and ability to analyse a scientific article. | ||||||||
Competencies: | • competence to support the orthodontist during orthodontic treatment, motivating the patient and helping to ensure oral hygiene, explaining the basic principles of orthodontic treatment; • ability to assess the risks of development of bite anomalies after premature tooth extractions. | ||||||||
