Assessment
Unaided Work:
Independent work with trauma-orthopaedics special literature, internet resources and e-study materials.
Assessment Criteria:
On completion on B part study semester – semester test, assessment – pass/fail. On completion of the B part study course – exam; assessment – in a 10-point system. Test in each class. During the course – the colloquium (case interpretation), takes place in the wards of the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. During the colloquium each student examines one patient who undergoes treatment in the clinic of traumatology or orthopaedics. Criteria: 1. Student has filled in the all parts of the colloquium form precisely and understandably. 2. Student is able to present the patient orally and answer to the lecturer's questions. 3. Student passes the clinical examination in the orthopaedics – for particular patient and specific pathology. 4. The final assessment for the colloquium is “pass”, if at least 59% of the amount of colloquium are acquired and is sufficient understanding of the basic concepts. 5. If the final assessment for the colloquium is “fail”, student shall agree with lecturer about date and time for the colloquium repeatedly. Colloquium accounts for 50% from assessment. Assessment criteria for the semester test: the assessment for the semester test is “pass”, if student passed all practical classes and the colloquium. At the end of Orthopaedics course – exam (10-point grading scale) Assessment criteria for the exam: 1. In the Rīga Stradiņš University Department of Orthopaedics student is allowed to take the exam , if student for the colloquium and semester test gets the assessment “pass” and no absence of practical classes or practical classes are made up. 2. After completion of the study course “Orthopaedics” study group leader contacts with the Head of the Office of the RSU Department of Orthopaedics to get to know about possible date and time to take exam before session or during session. 3. To apply for exam, study group leader applies the list of students (with student's signatures) to the Head of the Office of the RSU Department of Orthopaedics, which confirms students desire to take exam in the particular date and time. 4. If student applied for exam, but can not arrive because of the foregone reasons, student shall inform Head of the Office of the RSU Department of Orthopaedics in written form at least 5 days before exam. 5. If the written application, that student will not take exam is not received, the assessment “fail” is considered and student shall to take exam in front of the Commission of lecturers established by the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics. 6. Student presents prepared clinical case on the exam and has to answer on 4 questions about this case. Every question has percentage according to the importance of question. Students assessment is sum of these percentage according to the Academic Regulations.7. The student is successful, if he/she gets the assessment “almost satisfactory” (4 points) or higher (at least in the four base stations student gets 1 point). 8. If student gets 3 points or less, the exam assesment is “fail”. 9. If the assessment for exam is “fail”, student agrees with the Head of Department of Orthopaedics about date and time for the repeated examination. 10. Student takes the exam repeatedly in in front of the Commission of lecturers of the Department of Orthopaedics: 10.1. in the repeated examination student draws three tickets, prepares answers in written form, then answers the questions orally. 10.2. If at least 55% of the amount of learning outcomes is acquired, student gets the assessment “almost satisfactory” (4 points) or higher.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon completion of the Part B study course, the student will know algorithms for examination of patients with orthopaedic trauma (polytrauma and burn injuries) and patients with orthopaedic diseases, emergency orthopaedic manipulations in the admissions department, basic principles of conservative treatment, osteosynthesis, arthroscopy, large joint replacement and rehabilitation tasks.
Skills:Students will be able to carry out examination of patients with trauma (polytrauma) and burn injuries in accordance with algorithms and patients with orthopaedic diseases, perform basic emergency manipulations, osteosynthesis and arthroscopy in the simulated environment.
Competencies:Students will be able to use algorithms of examination and treatment, to diagnose, plan additional examination and treatment plan, explain and justify basic principles of treatment and evaluate prognosis.
