Preliminary Knowledge: | • Psychology; developmental and medical psychology; • Ethics in medicine; • Epidemiology (types of research); • Public health (risk factors, types of prevention, health promotion opportunities); • Basic pharmacology; • Basic principles of clinical care (deontology, iatrogeny, patient interview). | ||||||||
Objective: | To acquire knowledge about the prevalence, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and course of mental disorders (according to the ICD-10), medicinal and psychological basic principles of treatment, prevention of mental diseases and possibilities of rehabilitation; to gain the knowledge about the organization and operation of the psychiatric services, including ethical and legal principles, the distribution of competences among different specialists, the competences of the art therapist and the planning and organization of the care of mentally ill patients. To acquire the skills to communicate with patients in a gentle, supportive and educational manner. To teach to assess the mental state of patients, to understand its dynamics during therapy. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | Students independently acquire the theoretical part of practical work using RSU e-study materials, information given in the lecture and recommended additional literature. During the lessons, the results of independent work are checked and discussed in a group. Students assess the mental state of the patients demonstrated during practical work (video demonstrations or patients in the clinic) and develop an aspect of art therapy, which is analyzed in a group. Preparation of clinical case descriptions. Prepare a 10-minute presentation on one of the proposed topics, which will be presented in one of the classes. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | The final exam is cumulative. Students independently acquire the theoretical part, using RSU e-study materials, information given in the lecture and recommended additional literature. During the lessons, the results of independent work are checked and discussed in a group. The cumulative exam requires assessments in each lesson. To successfully pass the cumulative exam, it is necessary to: 1. pass the multiple-choice test questions in each lesson; 2. submit in e-studies a description of the interpretation of clinical cases and / or a description of the patient's interpretation demonstrated during the lesson; receive a positive evaluation (3 clinical descriptions in total); 3. to prepare and successfully defend one thematic presentation, the topics of the presentations are placed in e-studies. Each task is evaluated with a mark in a 10-point system; cumulative exam mark is formed: 50% average mark for three homework 50% mark for thematic presentation. If the independent works are not prepared or submitted on time, as well as in the case of unjustified missed classes, a written examination is provided at the end of the cycle, where 50% is made up of the examination mark and 50% of the independent work. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Knows the prevalence of mental disorders, etiological factors, and clinical course. Can formulate psychiatric symptoms and syndromes and understands the concepts of major mental disorders. Is able to name the most important treatment methods for various psychiatric diseases, to recognize the most commonly used psychopharmacological means, and understands the role of art therapist in the treatment of mental disorders | ||||||||
Skills: | Able to recognize, assess and describe basic psychiatric symptoms, evaluate and plan the type of patient care, ensuring the correct selection of the patient for art therapy classes. Can create an emphatic interviewing style for work with patients with mental disorders, be aware of the importance of therapeutic relationships in psychiatry. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Is able to assess the dynamics of the patient's mental disorder during art therapy and is able to explain it to the patient. Able to defend their views to other members of the patient care team. Is able to promote a healthy lifestyle in society within the competence of his / her speciality. | ||||||||
