Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Background knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and physiology and orthotics with soft and rigid braces.
Objective:
To use the orthotics in rehabilitation team work. To teach students to chose the appropriate technical aid – orthesis for an individual patient and to be able to make the appropriate orthesis, train patients to use orthesis, follow the treatment process with the orthosis use and, if necessary, to correct it, to work in a single or in rehabilitation team, individually and industrially manufacture orthesis for the patients with a variety of disabilities.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Students are invited to specific clinical cases where it is necessary to make rigid orthoses and make specific measurement taking tasks. For students there is given the opportunity to create individual orthosis model by the support and consultation of the teachers and technical orthopedic staff members. There is opportunity to participate at different stages of product manufacturing, to participate in the product fitting, perform an analysis of the fitting of the product.
Assessment Criteria:
The student's knowledge of the stages of the orthosis production process, types and indications of orthoses in neurological, orthopedic diseases, rare and congenital diseases and other diseases when orthosis is used is assessed. The student's skills to apply patient examination techniques, to determine the characteristic features of the patient's gait, to formulate the goal and tasks of orthosis, to choose orthopedic products and to argue the choice of their application are assessed. Attendance and involvement in work with patients, production of orthoses is evaluated.
Final Examination (Full-Time):Exam
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired in-depth knowledge of the complete production process of orthoses, the way of the examination required to assess the patient's needs for orthoses, what is the characteristics of gait deviation in patients with the need of bracing for the improvement of gait, will know in details what orthoses are available for neurological orthopedic and related diseases, will know what their indications are and when they should be applied. The background knowledge of orthotics with soft and rigid orthoses will be used in the clinical praxis giving deeper knowledge of the application of orthotics.
Skills:After the completion of the course, the student will have acquired sufficient theoretical and practical knowledge of orthotics to be able to perform the examination of a patient to chose the appropriate orthosis on the basis of the existing knowledge, to explain the stages of product manufacturing, to be able to make a part of manufacturing or complete orthoses manufacturing, to make the product fitting and explain the use of the product.
Competencies:• Ability to use the acquired knowledge for the choice of rigid orthosis types and application aspects; • is able to formulate the goal for the aplication of orthotics; • able to select alternative solutions for orthosis; • interpret the expected results of the orthotics application; • analyze the performance of the chosen product; • argue the benefits of selected product; • logically formulate and explain the goals and objectives of the aplication of orthotics; • evaluate the results of orthotics.
