Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge: | Successfully mastered theoretical courses planned in the programme.
Objective: | To enable students to strengthen and deepen the theoretical knowledge acquired in the programme and the applicability of this knowledge in practice, to link the skills acquired in study courses with the actual situation in healthcare-related companies, and in practice, based on the acquired study materials, gain additional practical experience and competences required by biostatisticians in their daily work.
Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | • Placement is a part of the study programme, therefore it is mandatory. • Work in a placement institution in accordance with the agreement of student placements. • The course and results of the placement must be reflected in the placement report (see the placement regulations).
Assessment Criteria: | Assessment using a 10-point system in accordance with the RSU Academic Regulations, consisting of the following: • Defence of the placement report (public presentation) – 30%; • Placement report – 50%; • Assessment signed by the placement supervisor or reference letter from the company – 20%.
Final Examination (Full-Time): | Defence (Placement)
Final Examination (Part-Time): | Defence (Placement)
Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | • The student will obtain knowledge, which allows to successfully apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the study process and its practical expression in professional activity. The placement provides the opportunity to test and apply the theoretical knowledge acquired during the study process under the supervision of professional practitioners. • The student will strengthen and develop an understanding of the application of theoretical knowledge of biostatistics in the student’s practical work in healthcare-related companies and organisations. • The student will be familiar with the following from the practical point of view: o Research planning in the healthcare-related industry. o Creation of documents related to statistical data processing in research. o Data verification, statistical processing and analysis of results. o Preparation of a statistical report. o Presentation of research results. • The student will know the specifics of the work of pharmaceutical companies, CROs, scientific institutions and the role of biostatistics (including biostatisticians) in it.
Skills: | • The student will be able to link the theoretical knowledge gained in the study programme with the practical experience gained during the placement, thus solving the daily challenges in the professional activity of a biostatistician more successfully. • The student will know how to do the following independently: o To define research design, create a research plan. o To compile a statistical analysis plan of the research. o To verify and statistically process the research data, to analyse the results obtained in the research. o To prepare a statistical report with the results of the research. o To create a presentation with the most important research results for a wider audience. • The student will be able to work in a team or independently, searching for missing information in various information resources.
Competencies: | • The student will be able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge and skills constantly and responsibly during the placement, strengthening them with practical skills. • The student will be competent to do the following: o To analyse the correctness of the research design and plan from the statistical point of view. o To evaluate the quality of the statistical analysis plan and suggest corrections, make a decision on the choice of the most appropriate data analysis method, based on the research plan and purpose. o To evaluate the results of data analysis, their accuracy, the correctness of the use of data processing methods and compliance with the purpose of the research. o To analyse and evaluate prepared research statistical reports. o To defend one’s point of view with arguments and discuss the obtained results with the opponent. • The student will be competent to participate in professional conferences with a verbal report or a research poster with a presentation of research results. • The student will be able to constantly plan and direct their professional development, deepening their understanding of biostatistics.
