Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
Knowledge of anatomy, normal and pathological physiology and biochemistry.
Objective:
The objective of the study course is to introduce students to evidence-based nutrition therapy as an integral part of the therapeutical process. The tasks of the study course include developing students’ understanding of the impact of nutrition therapy on the course of acute and chronic diseases, complication rates, the recovery process and quality of life, as well as acquiring the knowledge to innovatively assess patient nutritional needs and develop personalised nutrition recommendations for different clinical situations.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
As part of their independent work, students prepare a clinical case study on the specified topics, assessing the nutritional needs of the patient, defining the goal of nutrition therapy and drawing up individualised recommendations and a menu. Independent work is presented and discussed during class. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
Compulsory attendance with active participation. Test and /or presentation about each topic - 50%. Examination: 3 theoretical questions, written answers to be presented orally - 50%. The assessment is made on a 10-point system.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Understand the assessment of energy and nutrient needs of patients in different clinical situations. Explain the impact of various acute and chronic diseases on human metabolic systems and nutritional needs. Understand the different types of nutritional therapies and their applications.
Skills:To carry out malnutrition screening. To perform detailed assessment of the patient’s nutritional status and nutritional needs. To formulate an appropriate nutrition therapy plan based on an understanding of the current disease process. To select the appropriate type of nutrition therapy for the clinical situation. To adapt nutritional recommendations according to the clinical situation of the individual patient. To establish nutritional recommendations and menu according to the patient’s diagnosis and clinical situation.
Competencies:The student is able to perform malnutrition screening and nutritional assessment and to develop a nutrition therapy plan and menu for patients in different clinical situations.
