Preliminary Knowledge: | Secondary school level knowledge in economics, basic grounding in mathematics and statistics. | ||||||||
Objective: | To develop an understanding about the main areas, which are within the scope of economics at micro and macro levels as well as to promote the knowledge about the role of entrepreneurship in economics, forms of entrepreneurship, legal aspects, work organization and financial planning. | ||||||||

Assessment | |||||||||
Unaided Work: | - The students independently study handout materials, during classes they participate in the discussions about the content; - they do practical exercises; - at the seminars they participate in the discussions about the current socio-economic processes in the country; - students prepare and present independent work, - they do practical tests and examinations about the topics of the course. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Cumulative assessment that consists of assessment of the independent work completed during the course – 50% and exam grade – 50%. To be able to take the exam, student has to have a positive assessment in all the independent work completed during the study course. To receive a final grade, examination is mandatory. The assessment of independent work in case of an unsuccessfully passed exam does not increase the final assessment grade. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | The students will be able to: - elucidate the basic problem of economics and entrepreneurship, estimate the role of state in economics; - define the main economic goals and problems; - name the main legislation governing business and employment relationships; - name and elucidate the main functions of management; - describe leadership styles. - name the factors of inner and outer environment. | ||||||||
Skills: | The students will be able to: - distinguish the common and distinctive features of micro and macro economics; - evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various economic systems; - compare the economic indicators of Latvia and other countries; - estimate the role of state in economics; - discuss the influence of globalization on the national economies; - to analyse the business environment; - establish an organizational structure according to the type of business; - to estimate the efficiency of a leadership style. | ||||||||
Competencies: | The students will be able to: - analyze the economic situation in Latvia; - carry out SWOT and PEST analysis; - to develop a business plan; - analyze the financial indicators of a business; - evaluate the risks in business and make appropriate decissions. | ||||||||
