The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) film and lecture series, Cinema Lab, that focuses on how the media is portrayed in film will continue with the Hollywood blockbuster The Truman Show (1998). The film will be screened in the RSU Great Hall on 28 October at 17:00. This will be the second event of the cycle, and this time the film and the topics it covers will be discussed with the audience by RSU lecturer and film critic Dita Rietuma together with media professional and media group leader Baiba Zuzēna.
'The Truman show accurately outlined and predicted the threats to privacy that technology could pose. One of the main themes of the film is the technology that profits from controlling our privacy,' says Dita Rietuma. 'It is a good opportunity to discuss the place of reality shows in television history. The film, made by director Peter Weir, is not only a successful American blockbuster with popular actor Jim Carrey in the main role, but also a meaningful and prophetic look at the role of technology and reality shows in contemporary society.'
The film will be screened in English, and the accompanying lecture will take place in Latvian.
The screenings and lectures are made possible thanks to the support of the US Embassy in Latvia. Eight screenings of US films coupled with expert lectures on related subjects are planned for 2019 and 2020. All films will be screened in their original language.
