Assessment
Unaided Work:
Students complete tests for each video lecture. Performs practical works and tasks in the lesson protocol. Case study analysis. To prepare and present oral presentation according to criteria. Use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements and justify the use of the particular medicinal herb for treatment and prevention and predict possible side effects or makes a practical product from medicinal plants and presents the method of preparation, the necessary ingredients. Submit a presentation of the final work.
Assessment Criteria:
The final assessment is formed cumulatively: 25% for tests, 30% for evaluation of practical lessons, and 40% for final work. Formative assessment for participation in classes – observation of safety rules and methodology during laboratory works, ability to use schemes of plant morphology and plant determiners, ability to use names of plants during classes and lectures; ability to explain the results of an experiment on chemical and physical properties of biogenic substances and their basic structure; put forward conclusions based on the obtained results, ability to present materials about the goal of the action of plant biogenic substances and use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements; ability to choose medicinal plants for prevention of diseases, ability to foresee possible side effects and participate in a discussion about the use of plants in prevention, ability to prepare dosage forms.
Final Examination (Full-Time):Exam (Oral)
Final Examination (Part-Time):
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to carry out the following activities: explain the conditions for collecting, drying, and storing medicinal plants; justify the use of medicinal plants for the prevention of the organism; improve the functioning of the digestive tract; treatment and prevention of cold diseases; know the basic principles for everyday tea use; use Latin names of medicinal plants during lectures and practical classes.
Skills:Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to carry out the following activities: recognize the most popular medicinal herbs in Latvia; prove the existence of biogenic substances in medicinal plants and explain the results of experiments on the chemical and physical properties of biogenic substances and their basic structure; put forward conclusions based on the obtained results, make tea and infusion and pharmaceutical forms, and use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements.
Competencies:Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to analyse situations, logically formulate their opinion about therapeutic effect of medicinal herbs and choice of medicinal herbs depending on the goal, and anticipate side effects.
