Preliminary Knowledge:
Basic human anatomy, physiology and pathology, medical biochemistry.
Objective:
To provide knowledge on the problems of drug poisoning in Latvia and worldwide, interactions between substances used in everyday life and medicines.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
The student independently studies the literature offered in the study programme, summarises the obtained information. Prepares a clinical pharmacist’s assessment of possible therapies and makes recommendations for the prevention of poisoning based on the knowledge gained. In order to evaluate the quality of the study course as a whole, the student must fill out the study course evaluation questionnaire on the Student Portal.
Assessment Criteria:
Active participation in practical lessons, quality of oral answers. Exam: cumulative assessment based on class work.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:Students will have acquired the knowledge allowing: • to understand the interactions between medicines and substances used in everyday life and how to prevent them.
Skills:The student will be able: • to advise patients and medical professionals on the risks of interactions between medicines and substances used in everyday life; • to take part in and organise health promotion activities for the society aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle and informed use of medicines.
Competencies:The student will be able: • to implement health promotion measures aimed at prevention and early detection of diseases; • to monitor pharmacotherapy in case of chronic diseases.
