Study course description
Preliminary Knowledge:
In anatomy, physiology, classic and special massage.
Objective:
To strengthen and improve theoretical knowledge, gain skills in the basics of client massage, participate in the rehabilitation process, to educate the client, according to guidelines and standards, ethics and knowledge acquired in the study programme. To improve practical knowledge in practice, massaging clients of all ages. To base one’s activities on legal and ethical principles, respecting confidentiality. To understand the meaning of professional responsibility.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
• Placement logbook completed during the placement. • Evaluation of the student’s performance by each placement supervisor, filling in the individual student placement assessment sheet, which must be accompanied by assessment criteria and placement logbook. • At the end of the placement, a self-assessment of the student’s placement for each part of the placement.
Assessment Criteria:
The student’s performance in each part of the placement is assessed by the placement supervisor. At the end of the placement, the individual placement assessment and the placement logbook are submitted to the head of the relevant study programme within two days after the placement. The placement is passed: • if the student has worked 100% of the hours required in the study programme; • if the prescribed documents for the placement period are submitted; • if the student's assessment for the placement is at least 4 points, overall - pass; • after the placement, the student defends the placement at RSU Liepāja Branch.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:As a result of completing the study course, students will be able to do the following: - to use a clear and appropriate communication approach when working with clients of different ages and in team work, understanding the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication; - to perform general client observation and recognise physiological norms and pathological conditions within the scope of the competence covered in the study programme.
Skills:As a result of completing the study course, students will be able: • to obtain, evaluate and document data about the client, within the scope of the competence covered in the study programme; • to collect subjective and objective information; • to educate the client, their relatives, within the scope of the competence covered in the study programme; • to understand and apply manipulations in order to meet the client’s needs and wishes; • to observe the necessary measures in order to ensure the client’s physical safety, intimacy during the procedure/massage; • to take measures that ensure a safe environment for the client; • to take measures that ensure the improvement of the client’s psychological and physical comfort; • to take measures that ensure hygiene measures for the client.
Competencies:• To observe the client and recognise physiological norms and pathological conditions, responding adequately in each specific case; • To apply manipulations related to ensuring a safe environment and client’s comfort while assessing the condition; • To apply manipulations related to types of special massage; • To provide emergency medical assistance if needed; • To assess the client’s knowledge and skills in preserving and recovering health.
