Preliminary Knowledge: | Developmental psychology, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, general rehabilitation. | ||||||||
Objective: | Students should acquire knowledge of gerontology and geriatrics as branches of science, the human aging process and related functional problems of the elderly and the factors affecting them. Students should acquire the skills to critically judge the aspects of rehabilitation and care for the elderly. | ||||||||

Unaided Work: | Student independently compiles information and prepare a presentation about the situation of elderly population in Latvia, reviews literature and collects data and prepares a presentation on the latest developments in gerontology/ geriatrics, emphasising specifics of audiology& speech therapy. | ||||||||
Assessment Criteria: | Individual and group training exercises carried out according to the course topic during the semester. | ||||||||

Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
Knowledge: | Students will be able to name and explain the main theories of aging, to describe age-related problems in the elderly population in Latvia and in the world, to explain the functional capability assessment for the elderly, to name and describe the basic principles of working with elderly patients with various diseases in the rehabilitation and care. | ||||||||
Skills: | Students will be able to gather relevant information about the functional capability of elderly and the factors affecting them. | ||||||||
Competencies: | Using the knowledge gained in field, the student will be able to interpret the functional problems of older people and the factors affecting them, to analyse the process of rehabilitation for elderly patients. | ||||||||
