| Preliminary Knowledge: | Anatomy, Physiology, Somatic diseases, Fundamentals of pharmacology, Neurology and neurosurgery, Internal diseases, Oncology, General rehabilitation, Assessment and classification of functional limitations (which includes knowledge of the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), which explains health from a biopsychosocial perspective). | ||||||||
| Objective: | Gain an understanding of the concepts and development of palliative care and end-of-life care in Latvia and the world (applicable to adults who receive palliative care), based on a biopsychosocial and existential approach and taking into account historical, political, socio-economic and other contexts. The study course will explain the concepts of palliative care and end-of-life care and emphasize a holistic approach based on scientific evidence to the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical needs of patients and caregivers in the context of care opportunities in Latvia and the world. The study course will provide knowledge about practical care and ethical principles of dying patients. | ||||||||

| Learning Outcomes | |||||||||
| Knowledge: | Will be able to understand the concepts of palliative care and end-of-life care. Will be able to understand the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical needs of the patient and carers. Will be able to name palliative care options in Latvia. | ||||||||
| Skills: | Will be able to analyze simple clinical cases, seeing the roles and tasks of medical, nursing and support persons involved. Will be able to assess the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical needs of the patient and their carers. Will be able to define goals of care and competencies of treatment and support persons and cooperation in a team. | ||||||||
| Competencies: | Will be able to systematize information from clinical cases using the conceptual framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Will be able to gather information and interpret simple situational tasks (clinical cases) in palliative care and end-of-life care in a team. Will be able to reflect on and adopt an evidence-based approach to assessing capabilities and needs, working collaboratively in a team. Will be able to express opinions about assessments and methods in their disciplines. | ||||||||
