RSU medical students will teach first aid at Roadworthiness Test Night

To remind the general public, especially drivers, of the importance of being able to provide first aid members of the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Student Scientific Interest Group will participate in Roadworthiness Test Night. This event is organised by the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) and will take place on Sunday 25 August. It is aimed at encouraging drivers to adhere to basic road safety principles and to make sure their vehicles are in good technical condition.

By using special medical dummies students at the RSU booth will remind visitors of how to correctly perform first aid. They will also be demonstrating how to perform CPR and how to stop bleeding.

‘The biggest mistakes that people make when they see a victim in an accident is to stay indifferent, not help and be afraid to act. It is very important for everyone, especially drivers, to refresh their first aid skills,’ says medical student Kitija Meilande, who is also the Head of the Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Student Scientific Interest Group. ‘It is particularly important to know how to perform indirect cardiac massage, because that is the first thing we can do to help if a victim is unconscious and not breathing. Anyone can learn first aid to help a victim before emergency medical assistance arrives.’ Meilande has been working as a medical assistant at the Emergency Medical Service for six years and will be able to share both theoretical knowledge and her practical experience in how to give first aid.

RSU medical students will participate in Roadworthiness Test Night as part of the public awareness campaign of the RSU Health Express, which aims to impart students’ knowledge to the public and promote healthy lifestyles.

Roadworthiness Test Night is organised by CSDD in cooperation with SIA Auteko & TŰV Latvija. The event will take place on 25 August 2019 on 2 Antenas Iela in Riga from 8:00 to 11:00 where people will be able to bring their cars to get the technical condition inspected free of charge by the staff. The motto of the event is “We support safe cars!” and the purpose is to encourage drivers to participate in road traffic with vehicles that are safe and in good technical condition.
