Objective

Give students knowledge about the role of otorhinolaryngology in a general pathology, to acquaint students with clinical symptoms, current diagnostic, treatment and prophylaxis of ENT diseases and to develop necessary skills in clinical examination of the ENT organs.

Prerequisites

Anatomy, physiology, pathological physiology, acoustics, topographical anatomy and surgery, pharmacology. Preferable knowledge in radiology, oncology, infectious diseases, dentistry, neurology and physiotherapy.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

During the study course students will gain knowledge and will be able to:
• characterise clinical anatomy of the nose and paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx and ear, outline physiology of the ENT organs and their main functions;
• describe structure, principle of function and possible impairment of hearing and vestibular apparatus;
• explain speech, language, and voice formation;
• identify ear, neck and nose diseases;
• classify treatment methods and organize treatment plan;
• timely recognize complications of the diseases, in case of complicated and challenging treatment be able to organize multidisciplinary cooperation;
• explain with anatomy connected and interacting organ anatomical specifics for different patient age groups.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course students:
• demonstrate skills and abilities in endoscopic examination of the ENT organs;
• are able to interpret results obtained by additional tests: rhinomanometry, hearing tests and radiological investigation;
• explain and recommend methods for preventing ear and throat diseases and ear hygiene methods to the patients and/or their parents;
• comprehend pharmacological and surgical treatment methods of the ENT organ diseases.

Competence

• can plan own scientific research, using scientific literature based on clinical and academical trial results. Can explain principles of evidence based medicine;
• can substantiate the plan of disease treatment they have chosen;
• can evaluate and foresee prognostics of diseases;
• have knowledge of head and neck oncological diseases' risk factors, treatment menthods and factors which affect prognosis.
