Study type:Full time
Course level:Bachelor
Target audience:Nursing Science
Language:Latvian
Branch of science:Clinical Medicine; Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation

Objective

To promote the acquisition of knowledge about the stages and types of anesthesia, the risk of surgery and anesthesia, about intensive care in the most common situations in the clinics of internal medicine, neurology and surgery, as well as to learn the basics of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. To provide knowledge about the organizational foundations of disaster medicine, material and technical provision, assessment of the general condition of victims, basic principles of medical sorting and treatment, chemical catastrophes and their elimination, as well as knowledge of the epidemiology of acute exogenous intoxications clinical course, recommended treatment principles and more relevant toxic substances.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are the study courses acquired in the previous study years on the types of surgical operations, topographic anatomy, clinical pharmacology, pathological physiology, clinical laboratory examinations, as well as first aid on the patient's primary and secondary on-site examination, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation algorithm, basic shock algorithm.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of the study course students will be able to name and describe anesthesiology and intensive care methods, recognize and describe shock (especially hypovolemic, anaphylactic, septic), will be able to perform in-depth cardiopulmonary resuscitation, will be able to name and describe changes in pathophysiological and biochemical processes effects on the body and transmission of nociceptive impulses to the CNS, will characterize the types of pain syndrome blockade in the reflex arc stages, the basic principles of anesthesia, their advantages and side effects, peculiarities of preoperative surgery, basic principles of preoperative preparation and perioperative care, critical conditions and basics of intensive care. As a result of the study course students will gain basic knowledge of the principles of disaster medical consequences, providing emergency care to as many victims as possible as soon as possible, following the principle of priority, as well as basic knowledge of clinical toxicology - toxicological kinetics, clinical course of poisoning opportunities and peculiarities.

Skills

It will be possible to perform electrical defibrillation of the heart, basic measures of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ensure airway permeability with instrumental methods (airways, laryngeal mask, laryngeal tube, tracheal intubation, crichothyrotomy), will be able to assess the condition of the comatose patient. Will be able to sort victims at the scene and in hospitals, will be able to provide victims with vital functions and the necessary emergency treatment, according to the nature of the disaster and injury, will be able to use personal protective equipment; based on medical history, patient complaints, clinical symptoms and laboratory tests will be able to diagnose acute intoxications, assess their severity and the amount of treatment required.

Competence

It will be possible to perform electrical defibrillation of the heart, basic measures of advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ensure airway permeability with instrumental methods (airways, laryngeal mask, laryngeal tube, cricothyrotomy). Will be able to provide victims with vital functions and the necessary emergency treatment, based on medical history, patient complaints, clinical symptoms and laboratory tests.
