About Study Course

Credit points / ECTS:2 / 3
Course supervisor:Māra Pilmane
Study type:Full time
Course level:Master's
Target audience:Life Science
Language:Latvian
Branch of science:Clinical Medicine; Histology and Cytology

Objective

The aim of the study course is to develop students’ understanding of the development of the components of the human peripheral and central nervous system, the morpho-functional components, in particular the plasticity of the neuron structure, the structure and function of central and peripheral coordination of senses such as touch, vision, movement, thought, pain, hearing, smell, taste analysers, age-related changes, compensatory and adaptive responses and morpho-functional regularities in the case of normal state and under the oxidative stress conditions. At the same time the aim is to familiarise students with modern evaluation methods of morphological and functional regularities of these central and peripheral structures.

Prerequisites

Biology, medical cell biology, histology and embryology, physiology, biochemistry, also recommended: anatomy.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Understand the components of the human PNS and CNS, the major developmental stages of the nervous system, the central and peripheral mechanisms of touch, movement, vision, hearing, smell, taste, thought, and the major regulators, and the age-related changes and plasticity of these sensory structures as functions change. Know and be able to apply morphological research methods used in neuroscience.

Skills

Identify neurological slides among other morphological slides; distinguish between different sensory structures visually and decide the need for additional morphological information in case of a poor-quality slide/schema.

Competence

Discuss the preparation and evaluation of specific neuromorphology slides/schemas, be familiar with the main neuroscience subject areas and directions.
