Objective

To form fundamental basic knowledge in chemistry, which will be helpful in further studies in biochemistry and nutrition science.

Prerequisites

Inorganic and organic chemistry in the scope of the secondary school course.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After studies students will be able:
• to identify the main classes of inorganic compounds;
• to describe the main characteristics of each class and ability of mutual transformations;
• to identify functional groups of organic compounds and main classes of organic compounds;
• to use the international nomenclature system IUPAC;
• to describe the main characteristics of organic compounds in accordance of belonging to certain class of compounds.

Skills

After studies students will be able:
• to collect information on certain organic compound (food spice) and to prepare presentation;
• to perform simple experiments based on their theoretical knowledge.

Competence

A student who has completed the basic chemistry course:
• will be able to evaluate various substances, incl. belonging of basic nutrients and spices to a certain class of compounds;
• will predict their properties and reactions in various food preparation and biochemical processes.
