Objective

To prepare students for work in health care in physiological obstetrics.

Prerequisites

Physiological childbirth and postnatal care (Postpartum management); The care process in midwifery practice; Clinical pharmacology and obstetric care; Clinical care in obstetrics and gynecology; Management of physiological pregnancies; Newborn feeding and lactation; Interpersonal communication in healthcare; General care; Infection control in care; Propaedeutics; Basics of clinical care, Anatomy, Physiology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of completing the study course students gain in-depth understanding of the reasons and symptoms of commencement of labour, will be able to specify the gestational age, facilitate childbirth, outline natural relief methods of childbirth pain, analyse cardiograms, describe the process of physiological childbirth and postnatal period. Upon successful completion of the study course students will be able to describe the functional condition of newborns according to Apgar test and outline the physiology and proper technique of breastfeeding.

Skills

Student will be able to carry out specific examination of women in labour and women during the first week after labour, prepare a care and management plan of physiological childbirth, document all activities performed during childbirth, promote participation of women in labour in preparation of the plan and decision-making, manage and assist physiological childbirth at head first position, assess the physiological processes of early postpartum period, assess the functional condition of newborns according to Apgar scale, will be able to perform accurate enteral and parenteral administration of the prescribed medication and provide intravenous access with a needle and peripheral venous catheter, as well as help the new parents initiate breastfeeding.

Competence

By using the acquired knowledge of physiological childbirth process and postpartum period, students are able to assess the obtained data, explain the process of childbirth and postpartum period, understand the importance of education of women in labour and women during the first week after labour during childbirth and postpartum period, have competence and understanding of specific investigative techniques in obstetrics (vaginal investigation, cardiotocography, etc.), use their knowledge to educate women in labour, women in labour, women during the first week after labour and their family members about childbirth, postpartum period and breastfeeding.
