About Study Course
Objective
To provide an opportunity to learn about the regulatory provisions of the general and special parts of the criminal law of the Republic of Latvia and theory of criminal law, as well as to develop skills and abilities to classify criminal offences.
Prerequisites
General basic knowledge of public law theory.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will understand the place and role of criminal law in the public law system, will know the concepts of criminal law and understand their essence, will become acquainted with coercive measures under criminal law, and know the procedure of imposition thereof, as well as know the procedure for release from criminal liability and penalty.
After completing the course, students will be able to analyse the composition of criminal offences, to use criminal terminology correctly, and to classify criminal offences.
Students will acquire systemic competence (understanding of criminal law as a whole, general knowledge of the structure and functioning of the Criminal Law), instrumental competence (ability to understand and apply basic concepts of criminal law in context, ability to analyse components of crime, knowledge of the specifics of classifying crime, knowledge of circumstances that exclude criminal liability, knowledge of coercive measures under criminal law, and the procedure for application thereof) and interpersonal competence (ability to perceive, understand, and record the content of the theory of criminal law and ability to orientate in laws and regulations in the field of criminal law). Skills for critical interpretation and presentation of the theory of criminal law in written or verbal form. Ability to solve practical tasks independently and in a group.
