Objective

To enable students to learn and master the most important principles of surgery and basic skills in infection control/methods in surgical department, the most common types of bleeding and haemorrhage control methods/agents and tools, preoperative care and intensive care in acute surgical patients and patients operated electively, perioperative and postoperative care of surgical patient, to understand and acquire knowledge in treatment of surgical infections and common surgical diseases.

Prerequisites

Knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry ann patologic physiology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Students will acquire basic knowledge and understanding of the organisation and prevention of infections in surgical department; the symptoms and forms of surgical bleeding and haemorrhage control methods and tools; principles of wound healing and treatment; most common postoperative surgical complications, importance of prevention and treatment of postoperative complications; surgical infectious diseases, the most important diagnostic/treatment methods of common acute surgical diseases and traumatic injuries and its possible complications.
By learning and understanding these processes, the student will be able to:
• identify and explain the spread of infection in surgical department or clinic;
• manage surgical wounds;
• identify and manage patients with surgical bleeding, to diagnose the bleeding and know agents/tools to stop it;
• explain the most important parts of surgical operations, concepts of local anesthesia and postoperative period;
• recommend measures of prevention of postoperative complications;
• recognise simple surgical infectious deseases and "acute abdomen" and recommend a treatment plan.

Skills

On completion of the study course, the student will be able to follow infection control regime in surgical department; will be able to apply the wound dressings, will be able to use the temporary haemorrhage control methods/agents and tools; will be able to acquire anamnesis, evaluate general condition of surgical patient during pre- and postoperative period; will be able to provide first aid to patients with acute surgical diseases.

Competence

On completion of the study course, the students will be able to understand the origin of nosocomial infections; asses and manage the wounds; to understand the most common causes of bleeding, recommend measures/agents and tools to stop the bleeding, and will be able to compensate the blood loss, perform blood transfusion; understand the most important course of surgical operation and postoperative period.
