Objective

Raise awareness of the content of human rights with particular emphasis on the most topical human rights issues in the European Union. The course will be primarily based on an analysis of the most recent and important rulings of the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, while also addressing the context of these rulings. Part of the course will be devoted to rulings marking the interaction between the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights, raising awareness of the various human rights mechanisms available in the European Union.

Prerequisites

General knowledge of human rights and European Union law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of completing the study course, students analyse and compare mechanisms for the protection of human rights in the European Union and the Council of Europe, as well as gain in-depth knowledge of the methodology for assessing possible violations of human rights. Students familiarise themselves with the latest practices of the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice on topical human rights issues.

Skills

On completion of the study course, students analyse and apply the practices of the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice in the field of human rights and independently assess and analyse potential violations of human rights in the systems of the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Competence

The knowledge acquired as a result of the completion of the study course will enable students to integrate human rights issues while working in the profession of a lawyer in the public, non-governmental or private sectors.
