Objective

To create an opportunity to acquire foundational knowledge on the main principles of psychological counseling and its specificity in art therapy for various client groups. To develop counseling skills with clients/patients using different interventions, methods, and techniques within the context of art therapy. To provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills to recognize levels of personality functioning, defense mechanisms of the psyche, and the phenomena of transference and countertransference.

Prerequisites

Professional activity in arts therapies and its legal basis, Personality and development psychology, Neuropsychology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Describe the principles of the establishment of therapeutic relationship with a client/patient, explain the stages of individual consultancy and psychotherapy process, name the therapeutic interventions and describe the safe therapeutic environment factors.

Skills

MA students are able to identify and analyse client/patient needs, difficulties and resources, and partially interpret and integrate the information collected. Students apply consultancy skills, can establish safe environment and therapeutic relationship with a client/patient (in simulation situation); set up a consent (explain MT process, rules, get informed consent). MA student provides emotional support to the client/patient, facilitates change and facilitates solutions (in simulation situations). MA students recognise the applied consultancy skills at their own and other people's work. Can recognise the level of client/patient's personality functioning, the applied defence mechanisms of psyche.

Competence

Students reflect on their own skills and experience, can provide the coursemates with feedback about their skills. MA students express empathic attitude towards the client/patient (coursemate), analyse the problem in detail, evaluate predictions, accepting patients' needs.
