About Study Course
Objective
To provide the basics of infectious disease and the principles of controlling the spread of infectious diseases, to promote understanding of the potential impact of infectious diseases on the quality of life of an individual and health care and public health in general, to strengthen students' understanding and interest in research in this field; prevention issues.
Prerequisites
Biology, anatomy, histology, biochemistry, parasitology, physiology, epidemiology, microbiology, virology, immunology, pharmacology infectious diseases and internal medicine.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to evaluate infectious diseases according to their significance for public health; will know the types of spread and the typical symptoms of infectious diseases; as well as specific laboratory diagnostic methods and treatment and prevention options.
Students will be able to analyse normative documents in the context of infectology, plan and control the work of medical staff, determining the content and form of necessary preventive measures; will be able to evaluate the indications and contraindications for vaccination and perform vaccination; to draw up medical documentation; will be able to evaluate the procedure for taking the biological material under investigation and sending it to the laboratory.
Adequate handling of infectious diseases in sporadic cases and outbreaks; to take the material to be examined from the patient and send it to the laboratory for specific diagnosis of infectious diseases; use personal protective equipment and isolate the patient in the pre-hospital stage; to operate in accordance with the regulatory enactments of the Republic of Latvia and the European Union.
