Objective

To provide understanding and basic knowledge of international public law (IPL). To teach the ability to analyse IPL issues, to identify their nature and content; to provide knowledge of the role of IPL. To provide basic knowledge of the interaction between the IPL regulatory system and international IPL documents and their application in the practice of defence and provision of rights in Latvia. To help students to acquire the skills of independent studies in order to master the topics of the said course in sufficient depth and quality; to direct students towards research and analysis of aspects of various topical issues; to have proficient knowledge of international public law enforcement mechanisms in international relations, regulation and conflict resolution.

Prerequisites

Constitutional Law, Administrative Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the study course, students will be able to name and identify the most important aspects of international law; to characterise and analyse the basic principles of this law in the world and in Latvia; to orientate themselves in the international relations of countries, to analyse current issues of international law.

Skills

After completing the study course, students will be able to notice and analyse possible problems of international law, their causes, as well as to find solutions to prevent them; be prepared to take the necessary defence action in the event of a possible violation of international law by skilful application of the relevant provisions of international and national law.

Competence

The knowledge gained will enable students to become involved in the work of institutions applying international law, promote their competence in international relations, and in the protection, securing, development and promotion of this law. The acquired knowledge will allow students to participate in international competitions for job offers outside Latvia.
