Objective

To provide a basic knowledge in phonetics and phonology; to promote the use and extension of specific vocabulary for academic and professional needs.

Prerequisites

Knowledge in Phonetics acquired at a secondary school.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful course completion the students will be able: to explain and understand special terminology of phonetics and phonology; to understand and classify sounds of the Latvian language; to analyse and explain problems associated with classification of the sounds; to use Latvian and International phonetic transcription, compare both of them; to understand and analyse relationships between phonetics and phonology; to understand the spectrum of sound, make a description of measurements; to understand and analyse sounds of the Latvian language by using spectral features; to analyse and explain problems associated with the acoustic analysis of the sounds.

Skills

Upon a successful completion of the course, students will be able: to use special terminology of phonetics and phonology; to use phonetic transcription for professional needs in speech therapy; to use and compare methods of the phonological analysis; to use acoustic analysis of sounds for professional needs in speech therapy; to use a software for acoustic analysis; to formulate one’s opinion.

Competence

Upon a successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand classification of Latvian sounds according to phonetic and phonology rules; to apply symbols of International Phonetic Alphabet in practice; to analyse all Latvian sounds according to its spectral characteristics.
