Objective

To provide knowledge on fundamental issues of medical law. To promote students’ understanding of medical law and application thereof in professional activities. To acquaint students with the role of medical law in the Latvian legal system, sources of medical law, concepts and certain fields of medical law. To improve students’ understanding of the field by addressing current issues in medical law.

Prerequisites

Administrative Law, Introduction to Civil Law, Criminal Law. General Part, Criminal Law. Special Part, Civil Procedural Law, Criminal Law. General Part, Criminal Law. Special Part, Administrative Process, Legal Theory, Human Rights.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Knows: Laws and regulations governing medical law, the role of medical law in the legal system, basic issues of medical law and current issues in the fields of law, principles of medical law, rights and obligations of patients and medical practitioners, protection mechanisms thereof.

Skills

1. To evaluate and analyse actions stemming from patients’ and medical practitioners’ rights and obligations, as well as practical examples of law enforcement.
2. To conduct high-quality research in the field of medical law, providing a concise and legally sound opinion.
3. To prepare appropriate (necessary) documents to protect the rights or represent the interests of patients or medical practitioners.
4. Argumentation and critical thinking skills.
5. Communication skill (teamwork skill) – to communicate with groupmates about the information acquired during the course, thus providing social activity skills.
6. Self-discipline skills – to organize one’s own work (preparation for classes, etc.), to coordinate the deadlines, quality of individual and group work, to identify and select the most suitable literature for studying the subject.
7. To identify the problems of the situation, to formulate the complexity thereof, as well as to find high-quality law-governed solutions.
8. The ability to be flexible and adapt to new circumstances, as well as the ability to listen to the opinions of others and defend one’s own.

Competence

Student is able to perform specific tasks related to medical law and use knowledge and skills in professional and personal development. Application of legal norms in accordance with the public interest and priorities, thus synthesising the skills to work with the legislative base and understanding of law in general. Students are able to offer not only formal solutions to the issues in the field of medical law, but also provide solutions that serve the needs and priorities of the public (local community).
