Objective

The aim of the course is to learn assessment methods of nutrition and metabolism, including anthropometry and evaluation of body composition, to understand their role in human development process and ensuring of life processes throughout the entire life. Tasks of the course: 1) to give knowledge about assessment methods of nutrition and metabolism, their role in early diagnostics of nutrient, micronutrient deficiency, that allows to early find out and prevent risk of malnutrition or nutrient toxicity (too much uptake); 2) to give knowledge about main principles of energy balance and understand the importance of its changes in development of diseases.

Prerequisites

To start study course (or semester) all previous assessments according to Study plan (D1) should be successfully passed.
General knowledge in biology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After the completion of this course students will get deeper understanding of basic principles of nutritional assessment of healthy individuals and patients.

Skills

Students will be able to use and assess in practice the methods of nutritional assessment in different population groups.

Competence

After successfully completing this course students will have following academic competences:
1) understanding about modern nutrition and metabolism assessment methods.
2) understanding about nutrition assessment differences between different age group individuals, including outpatient and inpatient care.
Professional competences:
1) students will have understanding and skills to use professional nutrition examination methods.
2) students will have understanding of usage of nutrition and metabolism assessment methods and usage of acquired data in scientific research.
